HIV positive women are faced with multiple barriers in regards to their health and well being. HIV is seen in the community as a predominantly gay man's disease and thus we need to advocate to ensure women are included in government and HIV sector strategic plans. It is imperative that the Health Minister, government agencies, the medical sector and the HIV sector acknowledge that there are differences between men and women who are HIV positive, and incorporate the differences into their daily activities.
Positive Women Victoria works with these groups to increase the knowledge around HIV and Women. Issues that have been advocated for and will continue to be advocated for include: - Optional Ante Natal Testing for women - Inclusion of women on State Committees in relation to HIV - Women to be supported in an all female environment - Research into issues that effect women - Understanding the impacts on children of positive mothersPositive Women Victoria works with Secondary Schools to educate young people about the need to undertake safe sex. It is important that young people understand the risks they are taking when having unprotected sex. We have a trained HIV-positive female speakers that provide presentations to schools and other organisations who are interested in hearing real people tell their own story. A very powerful way of delivering the safe sex message.
As well as coping with the effects of the HIV virus, women face discrimination and stigma that they and their families must endure on a regular basis. By advocating for our members, we are ensuring a better future for HIV positive women and their families. |
